Avatar 2- Eco-feminist perspective
AVATAR 2 has earned 1.5 billion till now, but what is more interesting is the approach of this movie. The concept building and thorough research that Director Cameron and his team has done here. Amongst other approaches, the following points provide you the Eco-feminist perspective of this movie.
Jake Sulley has potentially act as a pro-nature guy siding with the 'Navi' people of Pandora during the RDA, Quartrich's invasion. The nature itself is quite an intrinsic part of these people who thrives peacefully within it. The culture of 'Navi' can be linked to the 'Tribal Culture' which are inherently pro-nature sustaining harmoniously with the ecosystem. The Greenery of the place marks the fertility of Pandora, which is not only preserved by these people but balanced perfectly. However, the invasion and machinery introduced in first Avatar movie can be linked to the destructive masculinity represented by Colonel Miles Quartrich, whose vigor and ambition to exploit Pandora symbolically depicts the oppressive Masculinity. Which disrupts the peaceful existence of Navi people.
Now, focusing on this movie 'The way of the Water', the writer has seemingly active about vocalizing the exploitation taking place in the aquatic region as well. The precise and detailing the scene focusing on the hunting of Tulkuns by Whalers exposes the atrocity of greedy and chauvinistic Men engaged in hunting of innocent animals to satisfy their ego as represented by Mick Scoresby who launches his attack on the mother Tulkun who happens to be the spirit sister of Ronal. This movie not only shows the torture of these creature but takes the audience on a journey of personal tragedy linked with the Tulkuns. These water creatures are as much spiritual being as any human or Pandorians, suggesting the sacred primordial belief of animal spirit having a close affinity with human world. The concept of 'amrita' has quite driven from Hindu myth of 'amrit' as 'an elixer of immortality' which is deemed to be recieved in Samundra Manthan, Churning of Ocean Milk by Gods and Demons, like amrita is a product of ocean mining.
Kiri, being the daughter of Grace, has a greater role to play as an epitome of perfect blending of nature and feminine virtues. Her ability to connect with her sorrounding makes her a unique character as if she possess essence of Pandorain life, "a holistic and ecological knowledge of nature's processes". Her mother, who was killed by RDA's attack depicts the exact caring and nuturing mother who not only saved Navi people but also became part of their Spirit Tree which explains the trans state and her soul being the part of their world. Her inherent character which had potential to exist with these eco-harmonious people is then shifted to her daughter Kiri, who possesses the ability to control the sea living creature.
4) Female Rage and Natural Calamities:
The oppression of RDA's mining in Pandora, specifically lead by Colonel denotes the masculine opression, where as the arrow which caused his death symbolically shows the female rage or the organic object having a capacity to kill a person despite of thousand machinery and bullets on his side. This film typically reflects the modern masculine dominated machineres destroying the nature-based feminine tribal culture. This we can find in character of Neytiri whose courage has undoubtablly occupies more screen than Jake himself. Eytukan's legacy is undeniablly upheld by Neytiri, with the passing of Bow, she preserves the masculine vitality in herself in more reasonable manner, the bow reverts the phallic denotation being possessed by woman than a man.
Finally, Tonawari and Jake Sully are both secondary to their wives Ronal and Neytiri in terms of courage and valour.
Wow!
